What is the Graston Technique®?

ANSWER:  The Graston Technique® incorporates a patented form of instrument-assisted soft tissue mobilization, like a deep tissue massage or a sports massage, but carefully performed to very specific areas that have been damaged. It breaks down the “bad” tissue and promotes “good” tissue. Graston enables clinicians to effectively detect and treat scar tissue and restrictions that affect normal function.  Most people will feel the effects of scar tissue as tightness, tension, restricted motion, “knots,” or aches and pains in muscles or other soft tissues. With the instruments, the scar tissue can be broken down and the area can heal up in a normal fashion. Dr. Rhodes is only chiropractor certified in the Roanoke area who provides this effective technique.

Why is scar tissue a problem?

ANSWER:  Scar tissue limits range of motion and in many instances causes pain, which prevents the patient from functioning as he or she  could prior to the area being injured. If left undetected, scar tissue often creates an avalanche of chaos in other areas, as we compensate for the damaged area.

How are the instruments used?

ANSWER:  The Graston Technique® instruments are used to enhance the ability to detect adhesive scar tissue (restrictions).  At his Roanoke office, Dr. Rhodes uses the stainless steel instruments to comb over and “catch” the fibrotic tissue, which immediately identifies the areas of restriction. Once the tissue has been identified, the instruments are used to break up the scar tissue so it can be absorbed by the body and the area can begin healing with normal, healthy tissue.

Is the treatment painful?

ANSWER:  It is common to experience minor discomfort during the procedure and some bruising afterwards. This is a normal response and part of the healing process.  I can tell you that if you stick with your treatment schedule, often the results are dramatic and people are surprised by the results.

What is the frequency of treatment?

ANSWER:   Patients usually receive two treatments per week over 4-5 weeks. Most patients have a positive response by the 3rd to 4th treatment.

Is Graston Technique® something new?

ANSWER:   The concept of Graston Technique® is grounded in the works of Dr. James Cyriax, an English orthopedic surgeon. Although similar techniques like Gua sha have been around for hundreds of years.

The use of the specially designed instruments and protocol is new.  The availability of Graston in the Roanoke Valley is also new.

What kind of results does Graston Technique® produce?

ANSWER:    Historically, the Graston Technique® has had positive outcomes in 75–90 percent of all conditions treated. It is equally effective in restoring function to acute and chronic injuries, and pre- and postsurgical patients.
